4th Monsoon Mayhem International Surf Challenge 2010

Hey dudes and dudettes....yep surfing is back again at Desaru Golden Beach Hotel!! It is that time of the year for you to bring your shortboards and longboards down to the shores of Desaru and show off your gig and ride on the waves. If you do not surf, no worries, you still can join in the fun and support the surfers. The dates to remember are January 2 & 3, 2010. Come on down to Desaru Golden Beach Hotel and if you are a surf buff, you would be sorry if you miss this.

The 4th Monsoon Mayhem International Surf Challenge 2010 is organized by Bigfoot Industries and co-sponsored by Tourism Malaysia and KEJORA and hosted by Desaru Golden Beach Hotel.

Monsoon Mayhem started in early 2006 by a bunch of young Singaporeans and Malaysians who had travelled to some parts of the countries in the region like Kuta in Bali simply to surf. Before Monsoon Mayhem, surfing in this part of Malaysia was virtually non-existent until in the early 1990's when these young people found an ideal place to surf in Desaru Golden Beach Hotel and they keep coming back here to surf year after year. Until they were inspired to organize Monsoon Mayhem as they see the potential of this sport and to turn Monsoon Mayhem into an international sports tourism product. Now Monsoon Mayhem has grown into the most highly anticipated surf competition in Malaysia that has attracted surfers from Australia, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, US, Singapore, Malaysia and a few other countries.

Desaru Golden Beach Hotel is one of the popular destinations amongst Singaporeans as well as the locals in the southern parts of Malaysia. Blessed with the South China Sea fronting the Hotel, the waves are rough and high during the Monsoon season especially from late November till March, and this is ideal for surfers to ride the strong and high waves. Because of its perfect location that is perched at the tip of the south-eastern of the peninsular, surfers would experience the full magnitude of the northeast monsoon.

Due to the short distance from Singapore to Desaru Golden Beach Hotel, we have now become a surfing haven amongst Singaporeans as well as expatriates who are working in Singapore to ply every weekend to surf. Not just the foreigners come to Desaru to surf, but we are also seeing more and more locals taking up the sport and coming here to surf on weekends. And they have created quite a buzz amongst the local beachcombers as they watch the surfers riding and getting pummelled by the high waves.

The 4th Monsoon Mayhem International Surf Challenge 2010 will showcase about 40-50 local and international surfers who will be judged by a line-up of distinguished judges from Malaysia as well as overseas, and having a combined experience of over 100 years in the surfing industry. There are exciting and awesome cash prizes to be won in five categories which are : Men's Shortboard Surfing Open, Men's Longboard Surfing Open, Women's Surfing Open, Grommet Surfing 16 years and under and Bodyboard Open.

There will also be other exciting events on the sidelines like a mini flea market displaying some of the local SME's from Desaru and our nearby areas who will be selling food, beverages, wearing apparels and handicrafts. And most exciting of all is that there will also be parties on the beach!! And lots of noise!!

So, come on down to Desaru Golden Beach Hotel on January 2 & 3, 2010. There are various ways to get here : by land from Johor Bahru via Kota Tinggi and then to Desaru Golden Beach Hotel; or a 25-minute ferry ride from Changi Terminal to Tanjung Belungkur; or a 45-minute ferry ride from Tanah Merah Terminal to Tanjung Pengelih.
