4X4 Off-Road Rendezvous At Desaru Resort

A group of die-hard 4X4 wheelers comprising 58 adults (the oldest was a 65 year old who still has what it takes for this kind of activity) and 8 children (the youngest one being only 3 years old!) from the 4X4 Accessories in Singapore arrived at Desaru Resort on December 19 to have some fun and thrills on our off-road tracks. Twenty four vehicles convoyed together all the way from Singapore to Desaru Resort as early as 6.00 am on that day. They are all club members from the 4X4 Accessories that has multi national members to-date. Having off-road rendezvous like this is a monthly affair for them to intorduce basic off-roading to SUV owners, to impart skills required for basic convoying, to introduce basic maintenance involved for SUVs while off-roading and most of all, to inculcate a spirit of friendship, teamwork and cohesive bonding from people of all walks of life irrespective of age and gender.

As reported by the meteorology that it would be a wet morning on December 19, hence, the group came prepared with some of their trusty brollies and some with their jackets, wind breakers and even makeshift ponchos. After having a hearty breakfast, the group convoyed to Desaru Resort via the B roads of Sedili, our beautiful coastal route. The view along that route is simply breathtaking and awesome.

They arrived at Desaru Resort at around 3.00 pm and were warmly received by our Sales Executives who had arranged for a special registration desk dedicated for their group to facilitate their checking-in to their villas. After the usual introduction, their welcome drinks arrived, their keys were distributed, merchandises and souvenirs were handed out, and then they were all set to go to their villas to freshen up after the scenic drive.

At about 5.30pm, the group left the Hotel for their rendezvous on our off-road tracks. They had a great time at the trails and a few vehicles had some trouble getting up the steep slippery slopes and had to be rescued! The rescuing itself was already an exciting adventure and experience. At about 7.30pm they arrived back at the Hotel after about 2 hours on the trails. A private BBQ dinner was arranged for them at the gazebo where there were lots of music and noise and laughter. At the same time, it was also a time of birthday celebration for all the December babies among their club members.

After breakfast on the next day, some of them who still did not have enough of fun at the trails the day before, had gone out again off-roading to enjoy the naturalist's paradise Desaru Resort boasts. They said that they would definitely be back for more. 14th Desaru-Pengerang International Long Distance and Sprint Triathlon 2009

Embarking on its 14th successful year, the Desaru-Pengerang International Long Distance & Sprint Triathlon returned to the nature's paradise of Desaru Resort where the event has long became a household name and a regular fixture on the international sporting calendar in Malaysia. The only international sporting event in the State of Johor, it was organized by Desaru Development Corporation, Johor Tourism Action Council and Johor Tourism Malaysia.

After making its debut in 1996, this prestigious event has carved a "brand name" in the international scene and has a strong following among the world's top triathletes, including our very own Malaysian triathletes. Desaru Golden Beach Hotel has been established as one of the premier locations for triathlons in the country as it has both the sea and beautiful greens that create a perfect environment for triathlon. The uniqueness of Desaru Resort's environment truly made the triathletes and enthusiastic spectators feel absorbed and soaked up by the natural beauty of flora and fauna as well as the friendliness of Desaru Resort's local communities.

The event offering both the international long distance and sprint events, was held on August 1 & 2, 2009, had challenged the triathletes in three combinations of sports, in swimming, cycling and running covering a race course from the South China Sea, the Desaru Road that stretched in between tropical rainforest and oil palm plantation.

For the long distance triathlon atheletes had competed in swimming (2kms), cycling (90kms), and running (21kms) whilst in the sprint triathlon, they had to compete in swimming (0.5km), cycling ( 18kms) and running (3kms). This multi-sport race covering three different sports had truly tested the triathlete's level of mental and physical endurance.

Every year the Desaru-Pengerang International Long Distance & Sprint Triathlon succeeded in attracting hundreds of local and international triathletes to participate as well as thousands of spectators to cheer and support the triathletes. This year the event had recorded more than 800 participants where about 600 were foreigners who came from 31 countries worldwide.

The triathletes started their race with the 2-km swim from the beach in front of Desaru Golden Beach Hotel under the close supervision by the lifeguards. Then they transited to the 90-km cycling over a kampung route through the beautiful lush greens of the rainforest and oil palm plantation. Ultimately, they had put on their running shoes to run the 21-km stretch over mostly flat paved road through the same route and head for the finish line back at Desaru Golden Beach Hotel.

While waiting for the triathletes to reach the finish line, the Desaru Golden Beach Hotel's Sunrise Coffeehouse was busy serving spectators with its Chef's signature food. The Hotel's Blue Horizon Karaoke Lounge was also opened for spectators to have some fun and a few rounds of drinks. The children also got themselves busy with the many games and activities which the Hotel's Recreational Centre had arranged. Not only that, this year's event also had portrayed about 5 kiosks from the Desaru SMEs who had displayed their products for sale.

After a long and hard day of swimming, cycling and running, some of the triathletes treated themselves to traditional massages and foot reflexology while enjoying the party songs that were spinned by the DJ.

The youngest triathlete was a 12-year old boy from Perak who had partaked in this event every year over the last few years. He certainly had big dreams to represent Malaysia in international triathlons and the Desaru-Pengerang International Long Distance & Sprint Triathlon was a springboard for him to realize his dreams.

One of the objectives of this International Triathlon was to promote sports tourism in Desaru and at the same time to help to increase the socio-economics of the local communities through the event's spin-offs and inflow of triathletes and family members as well as friends and fans of the triathlon. This event is definitely an ideal family outing by the beautiful beach and greeneries of Desaru Resort.

Luau Party By The Pool

Desaru Golden Beach Hotel's pool was turned into a Hawaiian Luau Party to celebrate the participants of our Srixon Desaru Classic '09 Grand Final on August 15, 2009. It was truly a stupendous night full of galore and celebration and everyone went home with lots of beautiful memories to cherish until the next Srixon Desaru Classic 2010.

Srixon Desaru Classic took over the spirit of Saske Cup and it is the only tournament using stroke play format based on 20 legs of tournament around Malaysia and Singapore from March 2009 until its grand final held at Desaru Golf and Golf Country Club on August 15, 2009. Every State in Malaysia (except for Trengganu and Sarawak) and Singapore had hosted the 19 legs where 2,000 amateur golfers had partaked. And five qualifiers from each leg were chosen to proceed to the grand final in Desaru and this year's tournament saw about 100 finalists and some invited golfers who had joined in the spirit of Srixon Desaru Classic as well.

The main purpose of this tournament was to search and scout for young talents, to groom them, and turn them into professional golfers to represent Malaysia in international tournaments. The champion of Srixon Desaru Classic '09, Mr Chan Soo Keong from Black Forest Golf Country Club in Kedah, proudly won a place at the Asian Qualifying School to play in professional tournaments.

There were lots of prizes that were won on that night and the prize giving ceremony went on and on as there were 40 prizes plus 30 Lucky Draw prizes that had to be given away! Practically almost, well, many golfers had gone home carrying lots of loots with them! Already the participants were given goodies worth RM600 each that included a backpack, two teeshirts, a cap, a pair of socks, vitamins and a few more. That alone was a galore that had carved many smiles on the faces of the participants.

There are plans in the pipeline to include senior and ladies golfers in next year's tournament to promote sports tourism through golfing as it is a healthy sport for all ages due to the natural setting and verdant green environment which the sport is played on. And that is not all! There are bigger plans in store as the Organizers wish to expand this tournament in the near future (maybe as early as next year) to cover more areas like having one or two legs each in Indonesia, Brunei and Thailand. This is going to be great way of experiencing other golf courses in the nearby region as well as engaging in the exchanging of arts and culture amongst us.

The Hawaiian Luau Party by the pool with a huge spread of BBQ and food galore ended with a loud bang after the guests cheered on the specially-brought in belly dancer from overseas and Latin performances on the stage.
